"Picking Up the Pieces"
Date
2024-2026
As a queer woman of color, I am deeply aware of how a society shaped by straight, white norms continues to treat those who exist outside of them. Picking Up the Pieces explores the persistence and absurdity of discrimination against women and queer communities across time. Using a comic book aesthetic, I combine digital illustration, humor, and satire to challenge systems of power while creating space for connection. Each poster blends bold imagery with subtle historical references like symbols, coded language, and details that resonate differently depending on the viewer’s perspective. Together, these works form a visual timeline of sapphic identity, highlighting both erasure and resilience.
This series is meant to confront, educate, and affirm. While it challenges those who perpetuate exclusion, it also offers recognition and comfort to those who have long gone unseen.
As a queer woman of color, I experience and notice how society treats people that are different from them.
